Survive is thrilled to announce that they’ve had £20,000 from The Health Lottery Foundation that will be used to support young adults living with sexual trauma in York and across North Yorkshire. Survive welcomes the support, which has been given thanks to players of The Health Lottery.
Survive has worked for 35 years to support survivors of sexual violence and abuse, helping them to heal and recover from what happened to them. Last year, 27% of those who used Survive were aged 18-24 years, reflecting Crime Survey of England and Wales data – that this age group is at greater risk than other adult age groups. Sexual trauma can cause setbacks and life-long disadvantages for young people. Without support, they can disengage from education, employment, and relationships. A student-survivor pilot showed 79% were better able to engage with their studies after Survive counselling. Students like Lydia*, who struggled with anxiety, low confidence, was terrified, constantly on edge, struggled to sleep and drank heavily to forget the past. After Survive counselling, Lydia was better able to manage her anxiety. As her confidence grew, she took up new hobbies, made new friends, no longer felt shame, and completed her degree.
The funding awarded is from The Health Lottery Foundation, which distributes money raised by players of The Health Lottery. The purpose of The Health Lottery is to raise money to improve the health and wellbeing of people across Britain.
CEO of Survive, Ms Mags Godderidge said: “We want young adult survivors to receive the help they need to heal, rebuild, and thrive as quickly as possible and before their mental health further deteriorates. This money will help us see young adults who have been impacted by sexual violence and abuse (including survivors of child sexual abuse) as quickly as possible.”
This grant was awarded to Survive as part of The Health Lottery Foundation’s drive to support the health and wellbeing of young people. Delva Patman, Chief Executive of The Health Lottery Foundation, explained: “Thanks to players of The Health Lottery, £757,421 will now be distributed to 45 charities across Britain, making a tangible difference to the health and wellbeing of young people. We are thrilled to be working with this project and look forward to sharing more about their achievements over the next few months.”
Health Lottery players have raised over £135 million for good causes over the past decade.
