From the Frontline: A Volunteer’s
Perspective
Almost a year ago, I read a small article in the local press
about Survive. I was interested in the group and felt its
services were much needed in our community. I decided to apply and was
accepted to train as a frontline volunteer.
The training was very professional and well above my expectations. I’d
had previous experience working on phone lines with other
organisations, but as the training progressed I realised that although
I was confident and familiar with telephone help line procedures, I
also had a great deal to learn about relating these skills with
callers who had sustained childhood sexual abuse.
The importance of empathy and respect for my unseen caller is always
paramount in my responses. I am acutely aware of the courage of our
service users in taking that first harrowing step of contacting Survive
and appreciate the trust they place in us. I hope that as a frontline
volunteer I have been able to respond to the expectations of our
service that the caller anticipates and deserves.
Now, almost a year later, I am very proud to be part of the service and
appreciate the ongoing training, and volunteer support that I receive
at all times from Survive.
